The highway key marks roads, tracks, and paths — the route network. The value gives the way's classification, which the renderers use to decide how prominently to draw it and at what zoom it appears.

How to tag

Draw a way along the centre-line of the route and tag it highway=*. The value reflects the road's place in the network — its importance and connectivity — not its surface or condition, which are recorded separately.

Values

Value Used for
motorway The highest-capacity, longest-distance routes.
primary Major through-roads linking large settlements.
residential Access roads within a settlement.
track Minor, usually unpaved ways outside settlements.
