English is a language of the island nation of Engil, where it is the common speech. It is a language isolate: it has no demonstrated kinship with any of the major language families, and its origins — remote from the continental mainlands — remain poorly researched.
Forms
English exists in two closely related forms, differing in only a small share — roughly three per cent — of the vocabulary:
- Traditional English is the form spoken by most people on Engil.
- New English is a globalized form, which replaces part of the traditional vocabulary with loanwords drawn from languages across Yezur.
The vocabulary of Traditional English includes a large layer of words without clear cognates in any other language, and the origin of this layer is poorly understood. It is chiefly this layer that New English replaces or reshapes.
