This list of languages catalogues the attested languages of the world, living and extinct, with the family, era, and principal region of each. The world's languages belong to five major language families — Herta-Olaic, Njeshan, Andusian, Shung-Worrehan, and Tacchoan — or stand outside them as language isolates. Modern languages, still spoken today, are listed separately from historical languages of earlier eras, several of which are the direct ancestors of modern languages. Reconstructed proto-languages, such as Proto-Herta-Olaic, are described in the articles on their families and are not listed separately.
