Yezur Wiki:English lemma worklist

From Yezur Wiki
Revision as of 10:23, 7 September 2026 by Thiorosan (talk | contribs) (second tranche published (449 lemmas); record the 17 affix-label glosses held out, the sub-sense lemmas that have no box, and the first-tranche defects repaired)

This page is the worklist for giving every Yezuri word an English entry to be translated from — the hub-language pass described at Yezur Wiki:Dictionary structure. It is a proposal: the triage below was made mechanically and then by judgement, and the operator rules.

Where the number comes from

The Lexemes table holds 4,284 non-English lexemes carrying 711 distinct glosses. Of those, 42 already have an English entry.

Glosses do not map one-to-one onto lemmas. Thirty-seven are a head word with a sense in brackets — bone (body part) beside bone (material) — and every one of those head words is already a gloss in its own right, so they add senses, not pages. Collapsing them leaves 638 settled lemmas and 36 glosses that needed a judgement call.

598 lemmas still want an entry. Ranked by how many languages share the gloss, since that is how much a translations box is worth:

Languages sharing the gloss Lemmas Note
10–11 163 core vocabulary; the richest boxes
6–9 23
3–5 281
1–2 131 a box here has one or two rows

Treat as an English lemma

female, woman 1 at female
give up 1 phrasal verb
head louse 3 compound noun
high tide 3 compound noun
lie down 10 phrasal verb
low tide 3 compound noun

tomorrow, the day after 2 at tomorrow
whole, full 1 at whole
yesterday, the day before 2 at yesterday
young man 3 multi-word noun

A sense of an existing lemma, not a page of its own

Gloss Languages Belongs at
flowing water 3 water
hand and forearm 4 arm
know how 1 know
mangrove swamp 1 swamp
mother's brother 4 uncle
the right, entitlement 1 right
we two 4 we (dual)
yearly flood 2 flood

Not an English lemma at all

These gloss what an affix does. The affix entries keep the label as their own definition; no English page follows. Seventeen glosses fall here — the four listed when this page was first written, and thirteen more that surfaced when the pass reached the Andusian and Besoh affixes. Every one is backed only by bound forms, so an English page would have to define an English affix, and English's own affix for the job (-ness, -er, -ery) has the better claim to that page.

Gloss Languages The affixes behind it
abstract noun 4 -ets, -ɛts, -ɛsi
adverbial marker 1 -due
agent 2 -so
augmentative 4 -ge, -gɛ
away 1 bon-
causative 5 ᵐbi-, bi-, mi-
collective 4 -uɣ, -u, -uɣi
diminutive 4 -dzi, -zi
inchoative 2 -kɛ, -ke
instrument 4 -ᵐbu, -mu
intensive 1 ro-
ornative 1 -onde
person affix 2 -aewe, -ayve
place 4 -õ, -oŋ, -oŋi
privative 5 sog-, so-, so'-
result noun 2 -me
stative 2 -wa, -va

Held out of the second tranche on that reading. Reversible: seventeen quick pages if the operator would rather have them.

Needs a ruling

  • he/she/it/etc (5 languages) — English has no single lemma covering all three.
  • Sub-senses with nowhere to put a box. The table above proposes hand and
forearm as a sense of arm, but the one-box-per-heading ruling
(Yezur Wiki:Dictionary structure, 2026-08-21) leaves a sub-sense no box of
its own. hand and forearm (5 languages) and the right, entitlement (1)
consequently have no English hub at all. For the same reason flowing
water, know how, mangrove swamp, mother's brother, we two and
yearly flood were given pages of their own in the second tranche —
against the table above. Either the table or those six pages should give way.
box, glossed singular; the plural forms yávhe, ιαπα,
*ixaβ and *luq have no home. Splitting the heading
(Pronoun 1 / Pronoun 2) would give them one, at the price of splitting a
 word English does not split.
  • 797 Lexemes rows carry no gloss at all and so link to no hub. A sweep of
its own, and probably the largest remaining hole in the Dictionary's coverage.
  • Two glosses are unqualified where their siblings are qualified, and were placed
by the conservative reading rather than a ruling: *komlit under the
combined dull sense, and the light verb forms
(annawzhtei and its descendants) under "to give light; to make
bright" rather than "to kindle". Both belong on
Yezur Wiki:Ambiguous glosses if that reading is wrong.

Open questions — answered

The operator ruled on 2026-09-07:

  1. Do the 1–2 language lemmas earn a page? Yes — "what is not now can still grow".
  2. How far down the ranking? All the way.
  3. Reciprocity? Do it; it may be deferred, but it should be done. Still outstanding: roughly four thousand {{d|word|YXS-EN}} backlinks.
  4. English etymologies. An English entry shows an etymology only where it is English-internal; {{etym-missing|YXS-EN}} implies no ===Etymology=== section at all. The 191 empty sections from the first tranche were removed, and the second tranche was written without them.

Progress

Tranche Band Lemmas State
First 10–11 languages 153 published
Second 1–9 languages 449 published 2026-09-07
Held affix labels 17 see above
Plus 42 English entries that predate the pass.

The second tranche also turned up defects in the first, all now repaired: eleven boxes had silently dropped a language's second word for a gloss (he beside ipe for and; bejuette beside bevhéj for wind; four of the eight you pronouns), and three lemmas were carrying two parts of speech under one heading — Dictionary:fly had "a small two-winged insect" as a second definition under Verb, with the three noun words missing from the wiki entirely, while Dictionary:rain and Dictionary:cold had the wrong part of speech in the box altogether.
